As part of the the Cambridge resignalling, re-lock and re-control project (C3R project), Network Rail has proposed the replacement of the Automatic Half Barrier Crossing at Meldreth Road in Shepreth with a full barrier crossing.

The Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Community Rail Partnership have responded to the consultation, objecting to the proposal on the following grounds:
- The consultation has not been properly publicized
- The upgrade proposal fails to provide key information
- The consultation makes a misleading assertion concerning a central feature of the proposal, i.e. barrier down time
- Applying an upgrade to Meldreth Road Level Crossing will create a number of new problems including new risk in the surrounding environment
