Station Tubs at Meldreth replanted in time for the Jubilee

Braving the drizzle, on Sunday 15th May the volunteer gardeners at Meldreth got the platform tubs ready for the summer and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

All the old, overgrown conifers were dug out, and replaced with red geraniums and verbena, white geraniums and begonias, and blue lavender.

Old hands at station gardening were joined by new volunteers from the Melbourn Timebank, and by one of this year’s Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteers.

All eight tubs on the station platforms received a makeover, which included adding plant food and a top up of compost. Water holding granules were added to each tub to help with moisture retention through the summer. The tubs will also be watered by Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteers.

After all their hard work, the gardeners enjoyed home made blueberry muffins in the shelter on Platform 1.

The Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Community Rail Partnership are very grateful to GTR for a grant to cover the cost of the plants and compost.
